Overview:
Clinical treatment planning in any mental health setting is often thought of as a necessary routine that must be completed in order to provide a guide for patient course.
Practitioners may treat the planning process with a cavalier approach, particularly after having completed many plans within their clinical setting. This training is designed to assist both newly minted mental health practitioners as well as seasoned professionals.
While the program is filled with practical steps, tools and advice, it also allows for creativity and independent critical thinking skills to be applied to the process.
First, participants will learn the importance of investing in the treatment planning process in a manner that provides immediate continuity and connection with the patient and their presenting symptoms. This initial part of the training explains the FUN in treatment planning.
Treatment planning protocol is explained through the assessment and diagnostic process, establishment of reasonable and attainable patient goals, and overall initial session interventions designed to teach patients about the treatment planning process itself.
Embedded throughout this section of the training are tips for engaging the patient in the process and helping them experience ownership of their defined goals, while establishing a therapeutic connection and building trust.
Clinicians often struggle with writing the plan itself. Participants will learn the essential elements in a written treatment plan, including how to write DSM V diagnostic narratives, well defined measurable goals with specific interventions, and other important clinical information pertaining to treatment.
While the bottom line basics are covered, there are variations in extra information that can be added to a well-written plan. Some of these elements are discussed as well.
Finally, no treatment planning process is complete without patient agreement and in those settings where necessary, supervisor and/or peer approval. The team approach to treatment planning is briefly reviewed. And, participants will learn perhaps most importantly the value of obtaining patient agreement and ownership of their treatment plan, their goals and objectives therein.
Protocols for therapeutic review of treatment plans, as well as methods for addressing achieved and non-achieved goals are explored. Implementation of the review and change process is discussed further.
A summary of the training and conclusions complete the training along with a short question and answer period.
Why should you Attend: Clinical mental health providers should attend this important training to learn methods for improving the planning and implementation process. This program will help practitioners further protect their own liability by offering strategies for naming exactly how treatment will carry out.
Additionally, learning how to improve written treatment plans as well as the assessment and diagnostic process behind treatment plans will help the practitioner increase clients' understanding of their own treatment as well as improving clinical outcomes.
Clinicians also can better know how to verbally integrate the treatment planning process into the treatment itself, which is immensely helpful when patients aren't exactly sure about steps in the treatment process.
